THE 315 - Musical Theatre History I Credits: 3
An examination of musical theatre, the emergence and development of the art form from the turn of twentieth century to present day. Particular attention is paid to the art form’s origins: African American Diasporic performance practices (and their iterations in popular music and dance), as well as the appropriation of such practices on vaudeville and musical theatre stages. Materials and topics in this course are discussed in the context of that history, critically examining how, and if, the American image is reflected on the musical theatre stage.
