The American Civil War continues to capture the attention and interest of many Americans - historians, amateur and professional; filmmakers and fiction writers; vacation-goers and ghost hunters. This course examines the history and memory of the war through a broad lens, extending from the founding of the United States into the twenty-first century, and exploring the origins of the conflict, the experience of the war, its outcomes for free and enslaved men, women, and children during the 19th century, the impact Reconstruction, and the ways in which Americans memorialized and commemorated the conflict.
