The American Civil War continues to capture the attention and interest of many Americans - historians, amateur and professional; filmmakers and fiction writers; vacation-goers and ghost hunters. This course examines the history and memory of the war through a broad lens, extending from the founding of the United States into the twenty-first century, and exploring the origins of the conflict, the experience of the war, its outcomes for free and enslaved men, women, and children during the 19^th century, the impact Reconstruction, and the ways in which Americans memorialized and commemorated the conflict.
