Communication and Media Studies - News and Sports Reporting Concentration

The News & Sports Reporting concentration prepares students for the ever-evolving world of journalism, as well as other related fields that require higher-level research and production skills. Students will learn about news gathering and production techniques for broadcast, online and more traditional print forms of journalism. In addition, focus will be spent on live or real-time news and sports reporting for platforms including, but not limited to, social media. Students will develop fundamental skills and advanced techniques including research, interviewing, writing, photography, videography, design and ethical decision making.

Communication Studies Requirements
All students choosing to major in Communication Studies must fulfill specific department core requirements. These courses contain skills, theory, analysis, performance, writing, and research. They are as follows (29 credits): Concentration Requirements
The multimedia journalism concentration prepares students for this continually evolving field where new trends and technologies are constantly having an impact on traditional practices. The Communication Studies Department addresses this transformation by incorporating these changes into its classes or developing new courses that deal with specific needs in the field. However, the core to any journalism training is the ability to work with words, gather information and synthesize that into meaningful messages for its intended audience regardless of format- print, broadcast or digital.
